Odyssey Day School’s upper grades (7 and 8) are
designed to solidify the critical thinking skills, habits
of mind, and content mastery fostered in the earlier
grades and necessary for success in whatever high schools
students may choose for the next step in their education.
Building confidence, citizenship, community service,
and a commitment to philanthropy are significant goals
as we strive to prepare our students for the larger,
global world beyond our close-knit community. Preparing
students for a lifetime of learning and leadership is
something we take very seriously.
While many students choose to go on to a variety of
independent, parochial, and vocational schools, others
continue on at their local public high schools. A high
percentage of our students are accepted to their first-choice
school. Many ODS alumnae have exemplary records at their
next schools, and often come back to Odyssey Day School
articulating appreciation for the educational and social
foundation they received here. We all take pride in
the high school achievements of our graduates.
At ODS, Lori Conway, Head of School and former admissions
director, manages the secondary school placement process
for graduating students. It is highly personalized to
each student and family, and takes into account each
unique set of circumstances, including the interests
and talents of the child, desires of the parents, financial
situations, and potential academic and social match.
At Odyssey Day School, the work of guiding decisions
about next schools is based upon the philosophy that
each child is unique, and therefore best-matched schools
are determined by considering the uniqueness of each
child.
Lori Conway works with parents and students in many
ways throughout the placement process, meeting individually
and in groups with parents and students; suggesting
schools to consider; conducting mock interviews with
students to prepare and coach them for a successful
secondary school interview; overseeing the teacher recommendation
process; organizing the paper flow and carefully meeting
deadlines; and being supportive in whatever other ways
that are needed throughout all steps of the application
process and eventual transition to high school, wherever
students may go. One of the benefits of attending a
private school like Odyssey Day School is that you are
not on your own when it comes time to leave!
