Course work for students in grades 5-8 includes integrated
studies in English, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Topics covered emerge from the classroom themes for
the school year and are integrated throughout the curriculum
areas. In addition, schedules include Spanish, Music,
Art, Technology, Special Interest Workshops, Health,
Life Skills/Community Service, and Physical Education.
Whenever possible, content in these areas is coordinated
with the classroom themes or with the overall school
theme.
By this time, students have completed the transition
from “learn to read” to “read to learn.”
Material is presented using a multi-modal approach designed
to immerse students fully in their own learning. Students
use technology more extensively for word processing,
research and other content support.
Students in the upper elementary grades are also expected
to act as role models in the school. They are given
additional opportunities to develop leadership skills,
and might contribute to the development of school rules,
plan and implement events, or be paired with younger
students to act as helpers for special activities.
